Human beings can only achieve their full potential when their bodies have been properly fueled, through nutrients in their food, to think, move, love and function. Food, as obvious as it may sound, is the starting point for existing, feeling, living and creating in the world.
However, 54.2% of the Colombian population lives in food insecurity, that is, one in every two households don’t have enough food available or the means to acquire it. Consequently, boys and girls living in these homes are at high risk of suffering from chronic and acute malnutrition.
Furthermore, inflation for food in the basic basket has increased by 13%, according to the official figures released in May by the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE, in Spanish, which means a price increase close to $40.300 COP. Bearing this in mind, Comfama and Proantioquia lead the program and subsidy Eating Comes First (#ComerEsPrimero in Spanish), in alliance with Éxito and Bios groups, Haceb, Iluma, Il Forno and Wajaca.
Education is an essential component of the program. Families that receive the benefit will receive support through educational contents that complement their purchase decisions, such as nutritious and healthy recipes, tips for preserving and making the most out of their food, and information about conscious nutrition based on scientific evidence.
This food benefit and program aims to mitigate the impact that the country’s inflation has on food prices, and is made possible thanks to the will of socially conscious companies and the leadership of Comfama, Proantioquia and Antioquia Presente.
Over 100.000 people applied to the #ComerEsPrimero (#EatingComesFirst) program and benefit, an unprecedented reception that speaks volumes of the companies’ social commitment with the well-being of families.
We’re no longer taking applications to participate in this program and benefit, as we’ve entered an evaluation period where we’ll prioritize families with lower incomes and most dependants. On August 24th we’ll announce the families that have been selected for this subsidy.
